But the boots on the ground—the ones that kicked back against police brutality—belonged disproportionately to transgender women of color: Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, and Miss Major Griffin-Gracy. These were not "drag queens" in the performative, temporary sense. They were living their truth as women, often surviving on the margins, unhoused, sex working, and refusing to hide.

The popular narrative that transgender women of color, such as Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, were central to the 1969 Stonewall uprising is now well-established (Carter, 2004). Yet, in the aftermath of Stonewall, the emerging gay liberation movement often marginalized trans people. Rivera was famously excluded from speaking at a 1973 gay pride rally due to concerns about “respectability.” Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, many lesbian and gay organizations pursued a “single-issue” strategy focused on sexual orientation, explicitly dropping transgender issues to gain mainstream legitimacy (Stryker, 2008).

Despite progress, the transgender community is currently facing an unprecedented wave of political and legal challenges. In 2025 alone, 24 U.S. states enacted or expanded restrictive legislation, including laws banning gender-affirming care for transgender youth and barring trans athletes from school sports. Over 910 anti-transgender bills were introduced at the state level that year. At the federal level, the Trump administration sought to limit access to medical care, remove discrimination protections, and erase transgender identity in official documents. In a major decision, the U.S. Supreme Court also upheld state bans on gender-affirming care for minors, marking a significant shift in transgender rights.
