Wiggle the rocker arms. If they have slight play, the engine is at TDC on the compression stroke. If they are tight, rotate the flywheel 360 degrees and re-align the "T" mark.

On the bottom left of the crankcase, there is a large cap containing an oil filter screen. Remove it and clean the metal shavings from the screen, then re-install.
